Levante’s Happy Hour

I hadn’t had a regular meal for a while week thanks to the pain I was suffering from my wisdom teeth. Finally, I began feeling a little bit better with the arrival of the weekend. Yesterday, my roommate brought me to a Mediterranean chain restaurant for happy hour–Levante’s in Dupont Circle.

With a view of the bustling street, the atmosphere is very low key. The back dining area is quiet, but the front bar area is abuzz with many happy hour guests. And with reason–the food and service is great at this place.

Oya: Fireplaces and Asian-French Fusion

Who doesn’t love surprises? Or appreciate a little something unexpected? Oya, an Asian-French fusion bar and restaurant in Penn Quarter, is full of them.

Here’s why you should go in a nutshell:

  • The artisan cocktails are phenomenal. They do all their own juicing and liquor infusions in-house. Their signature Lemongrass Lavender Lemonade cocktail goes down so smooth you can barely taste the booze.
  • The scene is very sexy. A great place to start a date, as long as you can snag a cozy seat. Fair warning though—it fills up fast and some of the smaller lounge spaces can get a little loud.
  • The food is outside of the box, in the best way possible. Short rib sushi roll, anyone? Yes. It’s a must. Trust me on this one.
Happy Hour at Oya is as much ambiance as it is artisan cocktails.

Mister Days: Where Hump Days Get a Little Wacky

I know today is Friday and all, so I don’t want to bring down the mood anymore than I have to, but…next Wednesday is Hump Day. This is normally a good thing (Geico camel, anyone?), but this Wednesday means we have exactly one week until Christmas. And this can only mean two things. If you’re not from the D.C. area and “home” is many miles away, your schedule may not have allowed you to leave for the holidays yet so you’ll still be around next Wednesday looking for something to do (me). Or, you realize that Christmas is in seven days, and you haven’t done any of your Christmas shopping (also, me).

The solution? Drinks. Happy hour. And I’ve got you.

In search of a regular bar at Logan Tavern

I’ve always wanted to be a regular somewhere –  to have that one bar you always go to meet your friends, like MacLaren’s in How I Met Your Mother or Cheers in… Cheers.  The thing about those bars that makes them special is not their amazing food, or their happy hour deals, but that they’re a central meeting spot – a place where everybody knows your name.

After four-and-a-half years in DC, I’ve yet to find my MacLaren’s, but I’ve stumbled across a few true neighborhood bars that have potential.  Situated on P Street near 14th, where the gayborhood meets yuppieville, nearby Whole Foods, Lululemon, and gay bars alike, Logan Tavern is one such bar.
